The Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) honored the region’s best public relations campaigns and tactics, as well as its most admired communicators, during the annual Renaissance Awards on Jan. 21.
Held at the University of Pittsburgh’s University Club in Oakland, the Renaissance Awards were emceed by one of the most credible and recognized figures in regional TV news, Shelia Hyland, principal of FosterHyland & Associates. Attending the night’s event were some of the leading communication professionals in Pittsburghrepresenting global agencies, Fortune 500 corporations, and elite higher education institutions.
An independent judging panel from the PRSA Central Ohio chapter evaluated nominations for more than 40 award categories, such as special events, media relations campaigns, and the newest categories in social media. The event was even “live-tweeted” by chapter members in attendance. The top entries earned the coveted Renaissance Award, while runners-up received the Award of Merit. Several categories carried multiple winners, depending on numeric totals determined by the Ohio judging panel.
PRSA Pittsburgh is now accepting proposals from Pittsburgh area non-profit and not-for-profit organizations that need public relations, marketing and communications assistance.
Under the direction of Public Service Chair Dana Hanzlik, a Public Service Committee will be established to plan and execute a communications strategy for the chosen organization.
The organization may request assistance for a specific campaign, project or event or overall organizational goals. Proposals must be received by Friday, Feb. 26, 2010.

Highlighting the variety of public relations careers available in the Pittsburgh area, Duquesne University and Point Park University will host the regional PRSSA conference “From Steel to Shine: PR Careers for Your Future,” April 16-17, 2010. Regional PRSSA members and other college students majoring in related fields, as well as members of regional PRSA chapters will be invited to register.
Whether attendees are looking for an internship, career or simply more information about the field of public relations, the event will provide them with an in-depth overview of what public relations in Pittsburgh is all about. Speakers from a wide array of organizations will provide insights into the differences between the plethora of career paths available in the Pittsburgh region, including agency, sports, healthcare and non-profit public relations.
